SKINCARE TIPS

Knowledge is power. Understanding the fundamental needs of male skin will help you to look after your skin in the most efficient way.

How is male skin different from female skin?

  • Is much oilier than female skin which can be a bonus, given oil protects your skin from dryness and ageing.
  • Has larger pores making it prone to bacteria.
  • Is more sensitive due to frequent shaving. Every shave removes layers of skin, leaving it irritated and exposed to infection.
  • Is more easily dehydrated. Dehydrated skin contributes to premature ageing.
  • Is thicker than female skin and therefore ages later in life.

What to use daily?

1. Cleanse/Exfoliate

Objective

  • Removes dirt, dead skin cells, excess oil, and other pollutants. Helps to unclog pores and reduce the development and appearance of acne blemishes.

Insights

  • Most men have oilier skin on their forehead and nose (dermatologists call it the T-zone) and therefore need to cleanse and scrub these areas more frequently.

Frequency

  • Cleanse twice daily and use an exfoliating face scrub (like Dr. LeWinn's Men Face Scrub) every other day.

Tip

  • Remember that oil is good for your skin, so do not try to remove it completely. If you have very oily skin, use a shine-control product which helps to balance and control oil-levels (eg: Dr. LeWinn's Men After Shave Fluid).

2. Shave

Objective

  • A protected and smooth shave prevents your skin from irritation, dryness and shaving cuts.

Insights

  • A shaving cream helps to protect and at the same time moisturise your skin, whilst gels and foams can dehydrate your skin. If you use a gel or foam, make sure that you wash it off properly to remove any residue that may irritate your skin. A shaving cream like the Dr. LeWinn's Men Shaving Cream is soap-free and therefore leaves your skin moisturised and smooth.
  • The softer the hair, the easier the shave. Therefore try to shower first and shave afterwards!
  • Always use warm water when shaving to soften your hair and reduce razor burn.
  • After shaving, use a hydrating and soothing product to close your pores and treat possible shaving irritation and cuts.

Frequency

  • Shave as often as required. If possible, give your skin a day’s break from time to time.

Tip

  • Razor technology is developing rapidly and a 5 blade razor is normally superior to a 1 or 2 blade razor, so think about upgrading if you want to have the best possible shave.

3. Moisturise

Objective

  • Dry, dehydrated skin can feel itchy, look dull, flaky and unhealthy and can age faster. Keeping your skin moisturised will help to prevent these symptoms.

Insights

  • The difference between a hydrator and a moisturiser
    • What a hydrator does
      • A hydrator delivers moisture into skin from the OUTSIDE. One drop of "nature's moisture magnet" Sodium Hyaluronate (the hero ingredient in Dr. LeWinn's After Shave Fluid) is clinically proven to attract and hold up to a 1000 drops of water.
    • What a Moisturiser does
      • A moisturiser helps to prevent the moisture INSIDE your skin from evaporating by putting a protective layer over your skin. It literally locks the moisture in (eg: Dr. LeWinn’s Day Moisturiser SPF 15).
  • Always deliver moisture into your skin first and then lock it in.

Frequency

  • Moisturise daily.

Tip

  • Most Australian men have a very active and outdoor oriented lifestyle, so it is recommended to always use a moisturiser with SPF to protect you from harmful UV rays.

Treatment

Objective

  • Specific care focuses on special areas, the area around the eyes.

Insights

  • Certain parts of your face work harder than others, for the area around the eyes. Everyday emotions leave their mark on your face and repeated facial movements leave the eye area prone to deeper wrinkles.
  • Using an eye cream is recommended to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, puffiness and dark circles caused by fatigue, active lifestyle or daily sun exposure.

Frequency

  • In the morning before moisturising and in the evening before bed.

Tip

  • Put your eye cream in the fridge. After a big night out, the cool eye cream provides fantastic relief.
